ANOTHER LENS
PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE EMERGENCE OF IMAGE CULTURE
Edited by Rahaab Allana

Another Lens: Photography and the Emergence of Image Culture (pub.Tulika Books and West Heavens (Shanghai), supported by Moonchu Foundation and Alkazi Foundation) is a new volume comprising eighteen texts in the series India Since the 90s (Series Editor: Ashish Rajadhyaksha). Reframing lens-based practices in India through a fresh historical perspective, the book produces a critical assemblage of well-known writing and image-making. Presenting texts by historians/critics to recent statements/interviews by practitioners, the contributors narrate how the 1990s sits at an intersection – a decade marked by economic liberalization, globalization and the ascent of digital technology that revolutionized the media sphere. Critically examining normative paradigms of image production, exhibition-making and circulation in the areas of documentary, fine art photography, journalism, cinema, contemporary art and the archive, the publication explores creative trajectories that inscribe the postcolonial imaginary within the wider orbit of South Asian image cultures.
