‘Resistance in South Asia’ organized by JOJO and Double Dummy in Arles from 3-9 July 2023. This ‘traveling library’ curated by Akshay Mahajan and Devadeep Gupta, weaves together histories of protests and resistance in South Asia through printed materials like photo-books, dummies, artist books, zines, posters, digital publications, and pamphlets.
Alongside other works, a short video consisting of printed materials from the Jana Natya Manch Archives/ The Alkazi Theatre Archives is on display that includes images of invitation cards, wall publicity posters, leaflets, journals, and books including the ‘Nukkad Janam Samvad’ a Hindi-language journal published by JANAM for 20 years, ‘Karvaat’, an anti-caste poetry collection, Sudhavna Deshpande’s ‘Halla Bol’ a Leftword Books publication and Arjun Ghosh’s book on JANAM. The video also includes photographs of Janam’s performances where printed material and written texts on placards are used as tools of protest in performance.
