Disciplining the Archive: Practices in Art and Pedagogy

This panel explored notions of the context of art education in the decades immediately following independence of India. With new art institutions that emerged in the wake of a new nation, art practices were being aligned in particular ways to establish their distinct material domains, historical lineages, and proposed futures. Compulsions around retrieval and archiving played a significant role not just to recover the past, but to forge new relationships between modernity and tradition, history and contemporaneity. Through this panel an attempt was made to bring into dialogue two distinct archival imageries that stemmed in two institutions, the Faculty of Fine Art in M.S. University of Baroda that was founded in 1950, and the National School of Drama, Delhi, that was established in 1959.
