Looking at some of the different formats in which photographic content appeared in print, ‘The Photographic Times’, an illustrated monthly magazine devoted to the interests of artistic and scientific photography, features a form of a photo-narrative on well-known pictorialist, Shapoor N Bhedwar’s most popular series, Tyag or Renunciation. Described in the editorial as “the best thing that Mr Bhedwar has created by far”, this publication from January 1897, features a series of seven images showing the process of renunciation initiated by a yogi, explained in detail alongside the images.
The second is a supplement of the ‘Times of India Illustrated Weekly’ from November 21, 1906 featuring a cover image by Bhedwar, titled “Reflection”. The supplement also features images by various other photographers from the “Times of India snapshots competition”, consisting mostly of natural landscapes.
